"Governing the Art Economy: Managing
Creativity. Contemporary Art in Berlin and New York
City"
My dissertation is drawing attention to
creative industries and their governance by exemplarily investigating
the realm of contemporary art in Berlin and New York City.
The extensive analysis of recent governing processes of these two
art sectors in different cities will reveal similarities and
differences, albeit universal structures, regarding the relation to
space and place, self-conceptions and the practises of constructing
art. Special attention will be paid to their “embeddedness” in
their respective policy environments in order to critically evaluate
existing governance modes and their benefits and to highlight
best-practice examples.
My methodological approach is
predominately following the maxim of grounded theory in comparatively
conducting and analyzing interviews with art market stakeholders and
government officials and in analyzing relevant documents and related
newspaper articles.
Regarding its scientific relevance my
work aims to contribute to the relatively young discourse of
governance of creative industries in cultural geography and new
economic geography. From a practical point of view my works aims to
provide a better understanding of the contemporary art sector itself
and its relation to the city and to identify potential policy entry
points to govern the realm of contemporary art.
