“Underclass? Self-Perceptions and Cultural Practices of Marginalized Urban Youth“

The term „underclass“ (or German „Unterschicht“) is contested, because it does not only describe a lower position in a vertically organized social structure, but it is also frequently associated with negative perceptions of the people it categorizes. Marginalized urban youth has been in the centre of both scientific and public debates about “underclasses”. In my dissertation project, I am accompanying school-leavers from disadvantaged families in Berlin for one and a half year in order to reach a better understanding of the ways they see themselves and society and of the ordinary practices which structure their daily lives. The research should offer new perspectives to questions of social inequality and to the ongoing discussions on marginalized urban youth.
