SE Toward post-tourism? Travelling, dwelling, touring in Rome

Massimo Moraglio

Modul 2: Dekonstruktion und Rekonstruktion

Mi 10-12 Uhr • HBS 103 • Beginn: 23.10.2019

The easiness of travelling, well beyond the kinetic elite, has transformed the tourist experience, which is today, in the global north, a mass phenomenon. Urban (over)tourism is gaining further relevance, while the temporal and geographical fragmentation of post-industrial society forces us to look beyond the tight categories of visitors/tourists/migrants. This leads to new, contradictory and unexpected social uses within the urban space.

In addressing the crumbling concept of tourist and dweller, this seminar aims to unpack some core concepts of the city: Which tensions are created between travellers and dwellers? How (post-)tourism shapes the urban landscape, its society, its economy? What does it make a city attractive? And, finally, why do we travel?

Rome, with is burdensome history, its religious relevance and its critical mass will represent our reference point in addressing the seminar concepts. A visit to the metropolis will conclude the seminar, where any empirical analysis will lead us to define more theoretical concepts.
