Dissertation
The Rezoning and Branding of New York City under the Administration of Michael R. Bloomberg (2002-2013).
My academic research focuses on the social, cultural and economic impact of urban restructuring policies in ethnic and working-class neighborhoods of post-industrial, advanced capitalist cities. My research is inspired by a strong interest in public policy and a desire to apply academic knowledge in a real-world context.
My dissertation connects scholarly research on capitalist-driven urbanization with an empirical analysis of specific patterns of socio-spatial restructuring in New York City under the mayoralty of Michael R. Bloomberg (2002-2013). In particular, I evaluate the impact of institutional re-zoning and branding policies on the physical, social and symbolic space of two low-income neighborhoods that boast a unique character and a legendary history (Harlem and Coney Island).
