"Urban Everyday Life – The Production
of Urban Places under Conditions of Spatio-Temporal
Dislimitations"
Spatio-temporal
dislimitations modify urban quarters. In order to explain and evaluate
respective processes the thesis builds upon two observations: first,
the temporal and spatial flexibilization of work and everyday life,
and second, the increasing importance of creativity and culture in
contemporary urban development. The analysis of the production of
urban quarters refers to the concept of the production of space
according to Henri Lefebvre and will be judged against the background
of his notion of urban space. Three complexes result from this:
1. Lefebvre’s complex notions of „city“, „everyday“
and „rhythms“ are associated and updated. With the following
theoretical concept it will be possible to put actual socio-spatial
processes into a social theoretical context and to critically evaluate
them.
2. In the Hamburger Schanzenviertel and the New
Yorker Williamsburg the new conditions of urban quarters get
empirically concrete. Qualitative interviews with people from the
music scene and design as well as official urban documents show the
quarters as interplay of: a) weak social networks a local, temporal
conditioned spatial practice, the perceived space, b) simplified
versions of creative-vibrant places as representation of space, the
conceived space and c) assumptions of self-determined organization of
everyday life in those quarters as spaces of representation, the lived
space.
3. Finally the central local aspects of
dislimitation processes – the 24/7 city of continuous activity,
localized cultural networks and imaginations of authentic urbanity –
are being evaluated with regard to chances for an urban-differential
everyday life.
In conclusion, the dissertation elaborates
new needs within urban life by combining theories of urbanization,
urban everyday practices and aims of urban policy. Thus it contributes
to a constructive critique of contemporary creative and cultural urban
development.
